A Home-Start volunteer uses her training to save her son's life

A Home-Start volunteer has thanked her volunteer training for saving her little boy’s life.

Wendy Inglis from Kincardine, trained to become a Home-Start volunteer in 2007. All volunteers take part in a ten-week training program before they are matched to their first family.

As part of the volunteer preparation course, St Andrews Ambulance run a session on first aid for babies and toddlers, including CPR. A session that was to prove to be a life saver for Wendy’s youngest son, Gilzean.

Last year, Gilzean, had a freak accident in the family’s garden. He stopped breathing, and Wendy was able to resuscitate him whilst waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

Wendy says this is all down to the Home-Start training course. Had she not become a Home-Start volunteer she would never have known how carry out CPR on a small child.

As a thank you for Home-Start, Wendy is pulling out all stops as she prepares for the challenge of a lifetime. She will be running an ultra marathon of 33 miles to raise much needed funds for the family support charity.

Wendy said: “If it were not for Home-Start then Gilzean would not be here today."
