Sandra Alexander completes the two Great Runs for Home-Start UK

One of Home-Start's regional consultants, Sandra Alexander and her running partner, Gerry Rock completed both the Great North and Great South Runs to raise money for Home-Start UK. (Pictured from left to right, Sandra Alexander and Gerry Rock).

Sandra said: "Both were great events and we would like to thank everyone who has sponsored us and also those who encouraged us to keep going. The weather in Newcastle for the Great North Run was perfect, very cool and bright and this year there were more showers to run through. Supporters were out in force and there was a real community feel as families stood at the roadside looking out for their families and friends. Most were running for large charities and there were a few small ones too- we wore our Home-Start vests with pride. The highlights for me were the Red Arrows soaring along the sea front just a mile from the finish in South Shields and the music along the way. Snow Patrol's 'Chasing Cars' will always send a shiver down my spine!"

A couple of weeks later and both Sandra and Gerry were back in their running shoes again for the Great South Run. Sandra recalls, "The weather in Portsmouth for the Great South Run was very different and it rained for most of the run. This didn't put the supporters off though and the roads were lined with people holding umbrellas and sporting wet weather gear, babies and toddlers cosy in their covered in pushchairs. People were cheering the runners on and it was great to hear a young girl shout, 'come on Home-Start'. I wondered whether Home-Start Portsmouth had supported her family. We are really pleased with the amount of money that we have raised so far, we have exceeded our orginal target of £500 and we are now hoping to raise £1,000."
