News Release

A new start for Home-Start

February 2008

Home-Start is changing its look. Over the next year people will be seeing a big change to the image of the UK's leading family support charity. But our work is still the same. Home-Start's unique and crucial support to families will not change.

Home-Start was set up in 1973 and last year helped nearly 35,000 families and over 71,000 children. It has almost 16,000 home-visiting volunteers who spend a few hours a week helping parents with children under five years old. The volunteers visit parents at home and use their own parenting experience to support other mothers and fathers and give them practical and emotional help.

There are 340 local Home-Starts supporting families across the country. Nationally the organisation wanted to refresh and coordinate its image to give it a broader and more distinctive appeal.

"Home-Start depends on public support to carry out its work with families. Having an image that is easily identifiable and memorable will help us raise the awareness of our work and offer supporters right across the UK a consistent message about the standards and quality they can expect from Home-Start wherever they live. We consulted widely on the new look and are delighted with how well it's been received by staff, funders, volunteers, families and supporters alike." said Vivien Waterfield, Director of Fundraising and Communications, Home-Start UK.

Our new image includes a new logo and strapline, fresh and modern colours, typefaces, photography and written style. This all comes together to create a common look and feel for Home-Start publications and has been designed to reflect our friendly, inclusive, family centred approach.

Research with over 250 scheme staff and trustees, supported families, volunteers, UK staff and trustees, funders and partner organisations indicated that the new image needed to reflect the charity's long standing core values of support, friendship, and families.
The research and development of the new look was funded by Home-Start UK. Local Home-Starts will have 12 months to roll out the new image.

Notes to editor

Home-Start is the UK's leading family support charity. We recruit and train volunteers to support parents with at least one child under the age of five. Our home visiting work is unique in the UK. Almost 16,000 volunteers visit families in their own homes - parents supporting other parents in a variety of situations including isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness or disability.
