Local man uses pedal power to raise money for the UK’s leading family support charity.

1st June 2009

Oxfordshire man Paul Britton is pulling out all stops as he prepares for the challenge of a lifetime. Paul is cycling from London to Paris in five days to raise money for national family support charity Home-Start UK.

On the 9th September, Paul will set off from London arriving in Paris four days and over 200 miles later. This is the first time that Paul has taken on this challenge and says that he has chosen Home-Start as it is not a charity that discriminates on who needs help.

"In our own little way we all want to make a difference to people's lives. Some put their efforts into the people closest to them and some into everyone they meet. I am no professional cyclist (far from it) and cycling to Paris from London is a personal ambition so it's not an entirely unselfish act of mine, however it is a good opportunity to make a difference to a lot of peoples lives", says Paul.

Home-Start has 15,000 trained parent volunteers who support almost 35,000 families and almost 70,000 children across the UK who are struggling to cope.

Support can be for a number of reasons including; post natal illness, relationship breakdown, multiple births, disability or poverty. One mum supported by Home-Start said, "People told me to put my children into care if I couldn't cope. No one listened to me. But my Home-Start volunteer hears me. I still have my children today".

Paul said: "Any donations would be gratefully received, and remember as well as giving to charity you will be spurring on those aching legs of mine not to stop pedalling!"
