Home-Start: support & friendship for families

Charity Challenge - top tips

If you would like to take part in a charity challenge event on behalf of Home-Start UK, you will need to consider the following points:

How to raise money through your event

Inexpensive ways to publicise your event include: creating your own website, contacting your local media, getting friends, family and colleagues to support you, or putting up posters in your neighbourhood shops, meeting places, public buildings and businesses.

Register with the charity donations website, Just Giving. There you can create your own web page which will tell sponsors about your event and enable them to donate securely online.

The law

You must comply with the law if you are fundraising for Home-Start UK. For more information contact Home-Start UK, or:

Finance

Have you planned how you will manage the collection and payment of the donations you receive? Remember that you can still collect donations after the event takes place. Contact Home-Start UK for more information and for support. We have many years' fundraising experience, and we are happy to help. You can download a sponsorship form here or if you would prefer to phone: 0116 258 7925.

Gift Aid

It's important to ask your sponsors to sign up to Gift Aid. Home-Start UK can claim back 28% of the donation from HM Revenue and Customs if the sponsors are tax payers. You will need to ask your supporters to sign a special gift aid form.

Insurance

You will need to take out insurance cover for your event. For more information, contact Home-Start UK.

Planning

Have you considered the time and resources you will need to organise your event? Be realistic about what you can achieve within your timescale. Try writing out a timetable of tasks that need to be done by a certain date and ticking them off when they are done.

Health

Are you physically fit and healthy enough to take part in your event? Try going to the gym or taking a few brisk walks to make sure you are in top shape for your big day. It is a good idea to get a check up with your doctor before undertaking any serious charity challenge.

Take part in a run or charity challenge for Home-Start. Home-Start offers a variety of events to participate in and raise valuable donations to support the charity. Examples include sponsored cycle rides, parachute jumps, treks and runs.
