Home-Start: support & friendship for families

Community fundraising

At Home-Start, we believe that the best possible start in life for a child begins at home with their family. Strong families raise happy children. Happy children grow up to be better parents. You can help us to support more families by raising much needed funds. The possibilities are endless, but here are a few good ideas:

Hold a fete or fayre

You can have stalls selling home produce, bric-a-brac and handicrafts mix with activity stalls for children and adults alike. This provides fun for all and is part of our national heritage. Fetes or fayres work well provided you have the space and the right number of volunteers to make it viable. You need to plan ahead.

Organise a quiz

Quizzes can be run in pubs, clubs, local community halls, schools, and boardrooms (and lots of other places too). Theme them to suit your audience, or use the theme of families and children and teach your local community a little more about Home-Start. Mix fun questions with brain teasers to get people talking and laughing. You need a good crowd, a dynamic quiz master and a prize that will inspire a little healthy competition. Try adding food and drink to increase the funds you raise. Boost them further by getting your prize and catering sponsored or donated.

Have a party

Instead of requesting gifts from your guests, ask them to make a donation to Home-Start. Make a short, but passionate speech on the night and pass a collection bucket around. You could also use your party to host a sponsored event, such as a head shave or an auction of unexpected promises!

Run a talent competition

Is there a comedian in your classroom or a crooner in your canteen? Maybe your vicar is a ventriloquist, or your manager does the moonwalk? You might never know until you ask! They say that everyone has got an aptitude for something, and as the vast popularity of televised talent contests illustrates, there are plenty of folk out there just waiting to grab the opportunity to flaunt theirs to the full. Talent shows are suitable for all ages, don't need a lot of specialist equipment or a large outlay to organise, and can be held day or evening, all year round. Why not give the people you know the chance to shine and support a worthwhile fundraising cause at the same time?

Put the fun into fundraising with talent contests - as well as supporting Home-Start, you might see a dazzling new side to your friends, family, or colleagues you didn't know existed…
