171 Holes for Home-Start

A team of golfers are hoping to set a new (unofficial) world record to raise money for Home-Start.

a team of golfers is attempting a new (unofficial world) record and raising money for home-start at the same time.
On 28 July a team of golfers are attempting the impossible: to play all ten St Andrews golf courses in the same day. Scott Finlayson, Gary Davidson, Graeme Dawson, and Alastair Loves (pictured here, left to right) should set a new world record of consecutive different holes played and, if completed, the golfers will have walked more than 35 miles.

The rules are simple: the golfers must walk the entire distance with no buggies and each golfer must finish each hole.

We spoke to Graeme Dawson, who has organised the challenge.

Top tips on doing your own charity challenge for Home-Start

Home-Start: There are so many worthy causes out there, so why pick Home-Start?

Graeme: I chose Home-Start as this is a charity which Fairmont St Andrews (my employer) supports through many initiatives throughout the course of the year. The hotel has offered great support to my challenge and we are all very hopeful that we can raise a sizeable sum for Home-Start.

Home-Start: How much money are you hoping to raise?

Graeme: Around £1,000, although this may increase as Fairmont St Andrews have just agreed to donate 25% of green fee revenue generated from people booking the evening £160 'tee time rate' in the week leading up to the challenge. They have also offered to provide four nights' accommodation in any Fairmont Hotel in Canada for a randomly chosen lucky golfer who books one of these tee times and therefore contributes to our fundraising attempt.

Home-Start: Ten golf courses in one day; it seems a huge task. Who came up with the idea?

Graeme: The idea came from an enquiry I received from a gentleman looking to play four courses in one day. A friend and I were joking about this and then suggested that if you could manage four, why not try and do the whole lot (ten) all in one day.

Home-Start: How do you prepare for a golfing challenge like this one?

Graeme: We have all been given access to the gym and spa at Fairmont St Andrews and have been using this only a daily basis for the past two weeks. 35 miles is a long way to walk in one day, so extra strong socks and good shoes are going to be a must! Scotland for Golf is providing a luxury coach for our transfers between courses so fortunately we won't have to walk these extra miles.

quote

I became a Trustee of Home-Start in 2000 simply because I so wished I had had the support of a volunteer during those very terrible times in my life....although I came through it all, I could have easily tipped over the edge. I don't want anyone else in my position to have to cope on their own.
