Volunteer for Home-Start
There are many opportunities for volunteering within Home-Start, both working directly with families or supporting those who do.
Volunteering for Home-Start
At the heart of our charity are our home-visiting volunteers. We have 15,611 men and women who volunteer to visit parents at home, giving emotional and practical help. These volunteers must have parenting experience and, before they are matched with a family, go through a training programme and have an enhanced criminal records check.
We also have around 2,400 other volunteers who help run our local Home-Starts - they will have all sorts of skills including:
- General business management
- Financial and legal expertise
- IT knowledge
- Human resources experience
- PR & media skills
A further 2,510 people volunteer in countless different ways running toy libraries, being a driver for a scheme or doing voluntary fundraising.
The volunteers who manage local Home-Starts are called trustees and they also receive special preparation for their role within the charity.
All areas of volunteering are very rewarding...but don't take our word for it - read the personal experiences of some of our home-visiting volunteers and of people who volunteer as trustees for local Home-Starts and for Home-Start UK

It's a good experience. I feel there is always good backup and support. I've learned loads and gained a lot more than I've given.
