Lindsay Nicholson
Former Good Housekeeping editor Lindsay lost her husband and one of her daughters to the same blood disease. The resultant depression and despair nearly sank her. But she fought back, re-built her life - and joined Home-Start.
"If life has taught me anything, it's that things can change in an instant. Money, status and a great career are no protection against the hammer blows of illness and death. Conversely, unimaginable tragedies - while never forgotten - can be superseded by love, joy and good fortune.
"I became a trustee of Home-Start simply because I so wished that I had had the support of a volunteer during those terrible times in my life. I am also very conscious that although I came through it all, I could have easily tipped over the edge. I don't want anyone else in my position to have to cope on their own.
"I think most of us, given just the right bit of help at the right time, can survive almost anything and, if we do, good times may be just around the corner."
