You can't build a house without foundations. So it doesn't matter how many home-visiting volunteers we have helping to improve family's day-to-day lives - without volunteer trustees our Home-Start schemes would lack management, direction and cohesion.
Every single one of our 336 Home-Start schemes is independently governed by trustees who oversee every aspect of their scheme's work, from funding to recruitment to strategy and policy. At the moment there are 2,302 people giving their time to Home-Start as trustees.
Many trustees serve their local Home-Start for a considerable number of years. But there is always a turnover of trustees as they move areas, or their own circumstances change and they are no longer able to volunteer their time.
Through the "We're Asking" campaign, Home-Start would like to recruit another 500 trustees to increase the numbers of trustees in schemes across the whole of the UK.
Research by TimeBank and the Charities Commission for their Get on Board campaign to recruit more trustees for charities across the UK shows: over half of all charities claim to have problems recruiting new trustees, and only 15% of trustees are less than 40 years old and only 5% from a black, minority and ethnic background.
