Snowflake AppealAbout our appeal Every child Home-Start supports is as unique and fragile as a snowflake. Right now thousands of young children are experiencing hardship or tragedy through no fault of their own. Many families need support to get through some very tough times and this is where Home-Start can help. Sometimes we are their last chance. You can raise money any time you like for the Snowflake Appeal. But we go big on it from 1 November to 31 January each year. You will help us reach thousands of fragile and vulnerable children across the UK. Blue Monday has become known as the most depressing day of the year. We have no idea if it's true. But post-Christmas debts, grey weather, depression and broken new year's resolutions all contribute. And at Home-Start, we are going to fight it, in the name of a good cause. We need your help to turn Blue Monday white with beautiful snowflakes, and raise £10,000 for our Snowflake Appeal and the unique and fragile children it supports. So get making now! All we're asking is for you to crochet a small white snowflake brooch. Then wear it with pride on Monday 16th January 2017 (Blue Monday 2017) to show your support for our work and to banish the blues. Crochet and crafting is well known* for helping improve people's mental well being and reducing stress - so you'll be helping yourself get over Blue Monday just by taking part. We have kits to help you get started, and instructions and videos to stop you getting tied up in knots. All provided for us by our supporters LoveCrochet & Bella Coco who are backing our Snowflake Appeal for the second year. "Hundreds and hundreds of people joined us in 2015 to crochet snowflake Christmas decorations. Thousands and thousands of flakes were made, and an amazing £10,000 was raised for the appeal", said Anita Frith, of Home-Start's fundraising team. "We are so grateful, and we can't wait to see what happens this year." If you can already crochet, or if you get addicted once you start, why not make brooches for your friends, families, colleagues or neighbours and ask for donations in return for them wearing the brooch you have made them". Home-Start and Snowflake Appeal ambassador, Kirstie Allsopp (below), has proudly put on the first snowflake brooch: The amazing Lillian (below), crocheting brooches while selling her lip balms. See how easy she makes it look: What to do next: simply make - wear - share Crochet using your own hooks and yarns. Or get a brooch crochet kit here. The money from the kits goes directly to the appeal. And don't just stop at one! The kits make lovely gifts for groups of friends. Last order date for delivery before Christmas is 14th December. Orders start up again from 4th January. What's in the kit? 4mm hook DK white cotton yarn from Three Bears Yarn Printed instructions card, with links to online tutorials Brooch pin All in a lovely organza, drawstring bag. Just can't stop crocheting? Then don't! Fill a long journey making snowflake brooches, or join forces with your friends, family or craft group to make loads. Then sell them to raise even more funds so we can help vulnerable children across the UK Get creative: the idea of the snowflake appeal is that snowflakes are unique and fragile, just like the children we support. Once you've got the confidence, your crochet brooches could be unique too. Make them out of any kind of yarn: sparkly, with sequins, or decorate them with beads. Donations: You can donate the proceeds of your sales/donations to the appeal here. Share: so we know that we are turning Blue Monday white with snowflakes.
