The Inca Trail is rated amongst the ten best trekking trails in the world due to its striking beauty, ancient Inca ruins and diverse ecological zones.

The trail includes very different terrain from high desert plateau to tropical Andean rainforest. Our ultimate destination is Machu Picchu – the “Lost City” of the Incas – one of the world’s most fascinating and important archaeological finds. Other highlights include the historical town of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, the Inca site and market town of Pisac and the capital city of Lima.

Accommodation:
Before and after the trek you will stay in 2-3* hotels in Cusco and Aguas Calientes. During the trek you will be camping. Both will be on a twin share basis with someone of the same gender and similar age.

Weather:
Cuzco can reach up to 30C at this time of year however the temperature will get a lot cooler at night. The weather in the mountains can be extremely changeable – being prepared is key!

Itinerary:

DAY 1: Fly London – Lima
Depending on airline schedule we may stay overnight in Lima

DAY 2: Arrive Cusco
Once we have settled into our hotel that day is yours to relax and explore the sites of this beautiful city whilst adjusting to the altitude, This evening there will be a trip briefing to prepare us for the coming days.

DAY 3: Tambo Machay
Today we will trek through a number of ancient ruins that are perched on the mountain side above Cusco. The Inca sites of Tambo Machay and Sacsayhuaman provide us with a great chance to soak up the unique culture whilst acclimatising to the altitude. Trekking time approx. 5 hours.

DAY 4: Cusco – Lares - Kunkani
Our day starts with a bus journey to the start of our trek at the mountain village of Lares (at 3650m) where we'll have a lunch and a chance to visit the local hot springs before starting our hike to Kunkani and our first campsite. Trekking time approx. 4 hours

DAY 5: Kunkani – Cruzcasa - Chacchapata
After a hearty breakfast in camp we begin our hike to Cruzcasa pass (at 4200m) where we'll spot the impressive Mount Veronica towering above us at 5800m. We pass the beautiful lake Yanacocha and after lunch start our final climb of the day to our campsite, situated at 3900m. Trekking time approx. 7 hours.

DAY 6: Chacchapata – Hatun Paso – Yanahuara Alto
From our mountain side campsite we head off this morning to tackle our first challenge of the day, a hike up the mountain to Hatun Paso at 4600m! From here the summit of the magical Pumahuanca at a dizzying 5600m comes into view about us. We then head back down the mount, past Aurora and Yuraq lakes and on through the lush green forest to our campsite at Yanahuara Alto. Trekking time approx. 7 hours.

DAY 7: Yanahuara Alto – Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu
We wake this morning happy in the knowledge that our exertions these past few days will be rewarded today with a visit to the incredible Machu Picchu! A short hike this morning will take us to Yanahuara where we hop on a bus to Ollantaytambo from where we catch the train to Aguas Calientes, the gate way to Machu Picchu! After enjoying a tour of the Incan ruins we'll have free time to relax and take in this amazing spectacle.

DAY 8: Aguas Calientes – Cusco
This morning we journey back to Cusco where we will have time to relax or explore the city. This evening we'll enjoy a celebration dinner where we can toast our achievements and reminisce about the weeks hiking and spectacular scenery.

DAY 9: Cusco - Lima – UK
It's time to say goodbye to Cusco and the mountains today as we start our journey back to the UK

What's included?:
Flights and all internal travel, accommodation, all meals during trekking days, water, local guides, Skyline Tour Leader and UK Doctor Camping equipment is provided, except sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

What's not included?:
Personal travel insurance, airline taxes (due to their fluctuating nature we will confirm this amount 6-8 weeks before departure; for this trip we estimate these will be £250, local tips, 3 meals, any additional activities in Cusco

What passport and visas will I need?:
A valid ten-year passport is essential and there is no visa requirement for UK citizens. Other nationalities should check visa entry requirements. Your passport must be valid for six months after the return date of the event.

Will I need any vaccinations?:
We recommend you are vaccinated against Hepatitis A, Typhoid & Polio. You must have had a Tetanus injection in the last 10 years. You should always contact your GP or travel clinic for the latest travel health advice.

What is the food like?:
You'll enjoy delicious Peruvian dishes which often comprise of local fish and meat with lots of vegetables, though there will be a few European additions you'll be familiar with too! Most dietary requirements can be catered for, please advise us at point of booking.
