We'll be staying in a mixture of western-style hotels, local hotels and farmers' houses. These are all basic but clean and will be extremely friendly. Rooms will be allocated on a twin basis sharing with someone of the same gender and similar age.

Usually 21-27C at this time of year however the temperature will get a lot cooler at night. Our route takes us along exposed sections of the wall – you should be prepared for weather changes.


The following itinerary gives you a taste of the challenge:

DAY 1: Depart London for Beijing

DAY 2: Beijing
After a chance to settle in to the hotel we will have a welcome meeting and a chance for you to ask any questions about the upcoming trek.

DAY 3: Beijing to Huangyaguan
This morning we transfer out of Beijing and catch our first glimpse of the Great Wall on our way to the start of the trek. After lunch we set off to tackle the Huangyaguan section the Great Wall – a section known to be particularly stunning with lots of restored water towers. Trekking time approx 3-4 hours.

DAY 4: Huangyaguan – Mountain Village
Our hike today leads us up onto the restored section and towards 'Heaven's Ladder', a steep climb of over 200 steps! Our efforts are reward with stunning views over the Yanshan Mountains and we continue along the path that winds around sections of the old wall. This afternoon we head down the valley into the mountain village where we will stay tonight; a wonderful opportunity to see what life is like for the people who inhabit this remote area of China. Trekking time approx. 5-7 hours.

DAY 5: Mountain Village - Jinshanling
After breakfast we say goodbye to our hosts and start out along the steep trail across farmer's fields up a section of the Wall called the 'Three Bordering Tablet' where Heibei province, Tianjin City and Beijing meet together. We finish the day with a transfer to Jinshanling. Trekking time approx 4-5 hours

DAY 6: Guebikou - Jinshanling
Today we tackle the Guebeikou section of the Great Wall where we will pass remnants dating back to the Qing Dynasty. If the weather is good we can see Miyun reservoir and the Wangjing Tower rising in the distance. Trekking time approx 5-7 hours.

DAY 7: Jinshanling – Mutianyu
Our trek today can be seen for miles as the Wall runs up and down the spine of the mountain. We'll take breaks in one of the many watch toweres on the way – you can be Genghis Khan never had it so good when he broke through with his Mongol hordes! Trekking time approx 3-5 hours.

DAY 8: Mutianyu - Beijing
Today is our final morning on the Great Wall! After leaving the hotel and passing a small village we start climbing a steep wooded track to the top of the Wall for our final breathtaking views over the far off mountains. After celebrations on the Wall we transfer back to the hustle and bustle of Beijing for our further celebrations and reminiscing of our achievements! Trekking time approx 3-4 hours.

DAY 9: Beijing
Today we take time to explore the capital, jam-packed with 17 million residents and steeped in history and culture.

DAY 10: Beijing to London
We transfer to the airport for our flight home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included?:
Flights and internal travel, water, accommodation, all meals during trekking days, local guides, Skyline tour leader and UK Doctor. Camping equipment is also provided.

What's not included?:
Personal travel insurance, airline taxes (due to their fluctuating nature we will confirm this amount 6-8 weeks before departure; for this trip we estimate these will be £370, local tips, 3 meals, any additional activities in Beijing.

What passport and visas will I need?:
A valid ten-year passport is essential for travel in China and must be valid for at least 6 months after entry into China. A visa is essential for all nationalities, costing approx £80. Skyline will send your instructions on how and when to apply for your visa approximately three months before the trip departs.

Will I need any vaccinations?:
We recommend you are vaccinated against Hepatitis A, Typhoid & Polio. You must have had a Tetanus injection in the last 10 years. You should always contact your GP or travel clinic for the latest travel health advice.

What is the food like?:
You'll enjoy traditional Chinese cuisine throughout the challenge including noodles, rice, meat and vegetable dishes. Most dietary requirements can be catered for, please advise us at point of booking.
