Home-Start UK, one of Scotland’s leading family support charities, has welcomed the publication of the Independent Care Review.

Home-Start, which supports 3,500 families across Scotland, is a local community network of 1,500 trained volunteers offering a wide range of services targeted to parent’s needs and responding to community demands that supports families going through challenging times.

Home-Start took part in the three year-long review at several stages.

Alan Webb, chair of the Home-Start Scotland National Committee said:

“Home-Start welcomes the findings of the review, particularly around the commitment to keeping children with their families and a need for universal support. We believe that investment in early help and community-based support that works alongside each family is the best way to help families stay together. This means identifying individual needs and shaping participative support that enables families to retain control of their lives.

The next stage is about delivering on these recommendations and making sure that Scotland fulfils its commitment to be the best place in the world to grow up. Over the coming days and weeks we will be studying the report carefully to see where Home-Start can help to deliver on the recommendations, but we believe that families are more likely to ask for help when they don't feel exposed to judgement and stigma. This means that families can be supported earlier and may avoid more intrusive or intensive care in their lives at a later point.”
