While much of the attention is naturally on mums, dads face their own set of unique challenges. Many feel unsure of their role or struggle with the uncertainty of it all, which can be really overwhelming. Tom’s Story For many dads, the neonatal experience starts with unexpected news. That was the case for me. A routine scan at 24 weeks revealed complications with blood flow, meaning his baby would be born early. Up until that point, everything had been going smoothly, so the sudden change brought a wave of emotions, fear, uncertainty, and a lot of unanswered questions. While the early warning gave me some time to prepare, it still brought a lot of worry and uncertainty about my baby’s health and future. Watch Tom share his story at the Halton Fatherhood Conference. The Challenges Dads Face A big struggle I went through - something a lot of dads can relate to - was feeling overlooked in the process. Research shows that nearly 30% of dads aren’t spoken to directly by healthcare professionals during neonatal care. That’s a huge number and shows just how easy it is for dads to feel invisible. I was lucky to have healthcare providers who included him in discussions and decisions, but many dads aren’t as fortunate. Too often, they’re seen as secondary, despite the fact that they’re also dealing with the stress and uncertainty of their child’s health. Balancing Work and Family On top of the emotional toll, there’s the practical side like work, finances and trying to be there for both baby and partner. Many dads continue working throughout the neonatal journey, fitting in hospital visits around long shifts. Money worries are another big challenge. With only two weeks of paternity leave, lots of dads have to go back to work before they’re ready, even when their baby is still in hospital. A Step in the Right Direction Thankfully, change is coming. From April 2025, the Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Act will give dads extra paid leave when their baby requires neonatal care. This is a massive step forward, giving parents more time to focus on what truly matters, being there for their baby. The problem is a lot of dads don’t even know this support is coming. Raising awareness is key, making sure that dads know their rights and employers understand why this support is so important. Moving Forward Progress is being made, but there’s still work to do. Dads shouldn’t be left feeling like bystanders in their own child’s care. They need recognition, support, and practical help to navigate the neonatal journey just as much as mums do.
